Maybe I should have joined the girl scouts as a kid – I got lost today. Would not have happened with proper navigating skills, maybe… I fetched my rental car today (the ugliest model in the entire world, but who cares as long as it doesn’t break down), and headed towards two black-sanded beaches which are famous among surfers due to their strong waves and currents. I took the signposted road to Karekare to see the “mysterious” of the two. But instead of leading to that damn beach, the road took a million bends which nearly made me sick and led back to the main road, making me pass the signpost to Karekare again one hour later… No, I was not drunk, there just was no beach, nowhere! The exit I came out read “The Lone Kauri Road”.

Anyway, I went to Piha insread to see some surfers and climb Lions Head, a sacred maori site towering over the black sands on shore.

The little babies fled before my camera.

Black as sand can get.
